Reimagining the purpose of education

Avanti Grange is a dynamic, inclusive and diverse community school with a unique and holistic curriculum offer, rooted in our collective purpose as a trust: to create spiritually compassionate changemakers.

Avanti Principles.jpg

Our curriculum immerses students in the powerful knowledge and intellectual conversations of a broad range of subject disciplines, equipping them to make sense of the world around them and to excel in a range of fields. By nurturing students’ sense of identity and perspective, purpose and connection, it creates capacity for informed and conscientious collaboration now and in the future.

Our core values, core principles and golden threads of connection run throughout the curriculum, ensuring that educational excellence, character formation and spiritual insight are equally developed.

For the first three years (Years 7, 8 and 9), students follow a broad and challenging academic curriculum, including the following subjects:

Remote Learning & BYOD

As a BYOD school, students access the curriculum digitally as well as through paper-based materials and hands-on learning in the classroom. See here for more information. In the event of school closure, remote learning will be provided to students via Teams.

Further information will be provided to parents in the event of such a closure.

  • The Avanti Grange Art curriculum is designed to encourage and celebrate students as independent artists while providing them with the skills and knowledge required to fulfil their artistic aspirations. Students are encouraged to think and behave as artists from their first lesson in the studio.  They develop a rich understanding of the purpose of an artist’s work and the history of art throughout humanity so that they are prepared to shape the future of artistic dialogue once leaving school.

The KS3 themes are designed around major genres in Art such as landscape, still life and portraiture to provide a broad, far-reaching overview of Art history and provoke enquiry into the same questions that artists have been grappling with for centuries. Students are able to produce a myriad of personal creative responses in a diverse range of media. Each year culminates in a student-led project that reflects on the theme studied in order that students are well prepared for the independent nature of the KS4 and KS5 curriculums.

The Avanti Way statements for Educational Excellence, Character Formation and Spiritual Insight (how we develop these within each subject)

Students are encouraged to stretch and explore a wide variety of drawing and painting materials, print making and sculpture techniques including ceramics, textile and fibre arts and digital mediums such as photography. Inventive experimentation is the cornerstone of the curriculum, but students are supported in their artistic decision making by the acquisition and development of key skills, vocabulary and technical theory.

Studying Art at Avanti Grange equips students with skills and experiences that extend beyond the art studio. The curriculum not only nurtures their artistic talents but also prepares them for a variety of future pathways. Students develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and creative expression, which are valuable in many fields. The curriculum is aimed at building confidence, fostering independent thought, and preparing students for further education and careers in the arts, as well as contributing positively to their personal growth and understanding of the world around them.

    Assessment and Feedback

Students are assessed continually in class through formative approaches including questioning, mini-whiteboards and whole class walkabout followed by teacher and peer review discussions.

Sketchbook work is regularly reviewed and assessed using quick feedback forms. Notes for development are added to ongoing project work using Post-its or through Microsoft Teams. Summative assessment which takes place twice a year reviews sketchbook and long term project work followed by whole class feedback and a report to parents detailing attitude to learning, progress and areas for development.

    How parents can help

How can I support my son/daughter in Art?

    • Ask them to tell you/teach you about what they have been learning – artworks viewed, techniques and skills being covered, individual project work being developed.

    • Provide a ‘messy’ space at home where art materials and project work can be left out over a period of time while being worked on

    • Buy or borrow basic art supplies such as colouring pencils and watercolour tins and brushes so that sketchbook work is varied and of a high quality

    • Assist time management for longer project preps that span a number of weeks

    • Check spellings in written areas of prep.

    • Encourage taking photographs when visiting new places or doing new things.

    • Encourage taking a sketchbook for use on holiday or for periods of time where you may have to wait for an extended period such as at a train station or in a restaurant

    • Download creative apps such as photo and video editing software, animation apps and drawing apps such as Procreate

    • Watch relevant documentaries together.

    • Support with Super curriculum challenges especially visiting galleries, museums and other cultural events

    Home Learning / Online Resources

Students receive a 45-minute prep assignment per fortnight which consolidates or prepares for the curriculum learning in class. All assignments are set on Teams. Assignments range from completing classwork in a sketchbook, independent drawing and making tasks or creating digital image resources to longer extended project work which may take up to half a term to complete.

Resources and extension materials are shared via the Class Team and the Super Curriculum.

The Super Curriculum can be found on the website. The Super Curriculum complements the Avanti Grange taught curriculum. Super Curriculum activities take topics of study in the classroom further, allowing students to explore areas of interest in greater depth, and point students to additional topics of interest beyond the taught curriculum.

Super Curriculum activities can take a wide variety of forms. Students are free to choose the activity that most interests them. Participating in Super Curriculum activities will help students to broaden their horizons, nurture their love of learning, open their eyes to the world through different disciplines, and build their wider knowledge and cultural capital.

    Assessment and Feedback

Students are continually assessed in Computer Science through formative approaches, including questioning, discussion, and interactive tasks. Teachers adapt their teaching based on students’ responses and progress during lessons. Work is recorded in Class Notebooks, often using screenshots of code and project work, and students complete various programming challenges and projects. This work is regularly checked by the teacher, who provides whole-class feedback and may ask students to improve their work or respond to feedback using green pen.

Twice a year, students complete formal assessments, where they tackle programming problems and demonstrate their understanding of key concepts. They receive whole-class feedback and a report on their attitude to learning, progress, and areas for development, which is also shared with parents.

    How parents can help

How can I support my son/daughter in Computer Science?

    • Ask them to explain what they’ve been learning – key concepts, programming techniques, algorithms, and how they apply to real-world problems.

    • Support them with active revision methods such as practicing coding challenges, using flashcards for terminology, or discussing the purpose of different algorithms and how they work.
